At Banff Adventures, there’s nothing we love more than introducing people to this great big backyard. From budget-friendly activity packages to equipment rentals and more, we’re here to make sure you have everything you need to venture forth safely this winter. Below, we’ll detail a few fast facts about one of our favourite places to visit in Banff National Park: Johnston Canyon. Read on to learn more!
The (Unofficial) Grand Canyon
Johnston Canyon is one of Banff’s most popular destinations all year round, and for good reason. This natural wonder is full of breathtaking beauty and features two sets of falls; one upper and one lower portion. One of the best aspects of visiting the canyon is that the metal catwalks and carefully groomed trail are much more accessible for general use compared to other hikes in the area, meaning that the whole family (and even fido) can usually join you with ease. To hike to the lower falls is approximately 1.1km and the upper falls are located about another 1.7km up the trail.
Exploring in Winter
As we mentioned above, Johnston Canyon is a year-round wonder, with wintertime transforming the powerful falls into beautiful works of art that wow guests and put the full power of nature on display. Designed to keep you sturdy despite the slippery surface, ice walks are a great way to get up close and personal with the frozen falls, and the catwalks will serve as a guiding path, even with the snow.
Banff Adventures is pleased to offer multiple ice walk tours ranging from 2.5-4 hrs, each of which gives you a unique way to experience this incredible piece of natural beauty like never before. For an extra special and undeniably romantic experience, couples may wish to consider our nighttime exploration tours, which allow you to explore the canyon by headlamp.
Prefer to venture out on your own? No problem! Johnston Canyon can be accessed without a tour group, and Banff Adventures offers cost-effective crampon rentals to ensure you have the grip you need to navigate safely.
