Why A Fishing Guide Will Make Your Banff Trip Unforgettable

Experience the serenity of Banff with a guided fishing trip on Lake Minnewanka—perfect for beginners and pros. All gear, licenses & permits included!
Steeped in centuries of rich cultural history, Lake Minnewanka is one of Banff’s renowned lakes. For over 10,000 years, Indigenous peoples have lived and gathered in the area—as indicated by an abundance of well-documented stone tools and weapons. Lake Minnewanka remains one of the most scenic destinations in the Great Canadian Rockies, where you can experience an exciting and immersive fishing adventure.
Why a Banff Fishing Trip with Guides?
Imagine it now: The icy-blue lake of Lake Minnewanka shimmers in the sun as you throw your fishing line in its depths. You take a deep breath of the fresh glacial air and close your eyes. The lake’s melodic song of crickets chirping, birds singing, and water lapping against the boat stirs in your soul. A deep sense of peace washes over you.
Fishing beginners and experienced anglers alike can benefit from booking a guided fishing trip in Banff. Our expert Banff fishing guides know Lake Minnewanka inside and out—such as knowing the active deep water pockets where fish are best found. They can also point out other common spots around the lake to catch glimpses of Banff’s breathtaking wildlife. If you’re lucky, you might spot some roaming elk or wading ducks!
Banff National Park has strict regulations on fishing to protect wildlife populations. Due to this, all park fishers must have a fishing license and permit. We take care of all of this on the guided fishing tour, so you can focus on catching fish and enjoying Banff’s natural scenery!
What to Expect on Your Guided Fishing Trip
Before gearing up with your bucket hat and ‘Gone Fishin’ sign, there are a few things you should know about before your adventure:
- Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the meeting point at the Lake Minnewanka parking lot. It’s around a 15-minute drive from downtown Banff. But the commute can be longer during busy, warmer months! We recommend getting there at least 30 minutes before your tour time.
- Please use the washroom at your hotel or in the parking lot before boarding, as there are no washrooms on board.
- Once on the boat, your fishing guide will take you to the best area of the lake, depending on the time of day. While you won’t find any Goliath Groupers, you’ll likely see plenty of Lake Trout and Mountain Whitefish in Banff’s Lake!
- Our Banff fishing guides recommend catch-and-release to sustain Lake Minnewanka’s fish population, but under Banff's fishing regulations, each group member can take home two fish.
- We always aim to provide an exceptional experience for everyone! Gratuities aren’t included in the price and aren’t expected, but our guides always warmly appreciate them.
What to Bring on Your Fishing Experience
Fishing requires a lot of supplies. Aside from licenses and permits, you also need to bring your own gear, including rods, lures, and nets. Not to mention renting or bringing a boat! Our fishing tour includes everything you need for an absolutely fin-tastic day on the lake. Just bring any personal items you’ll need, including medication, snacks, and a water bottle. We also recommend bringing a few layers of clothing with you in your backpack, as the weather can quickly change. We suggest a warm, rain-proof jacket and a comfortable fleece layer.
