Why Via Ferrata Isn’t Your Average Hike
Via Ferrata allows you to truly experience the stunning peaks of Banff National Park like never before. Unlike traditional hiking, which often follows more shallow terrain with minimal fall protection, the Via Ferrata does the opposite. Instead, you’ll have the exhilarating experience of climbing to steep heights along a protected, guided route.
You’ll be securely fastened to the mountain’s cable system the entire way, with two key components: the harness and the carabiners. The harness is attached to a steel cable which traces the mountain top and acts as a safety belt. As you climb, you’ll also be secured along the route with the carabiner systems. These carabiners are simple to use, allowing you to easily clip in and out as you move throughout the route.
Is the Via Ferrata Actually Beginner-Friendly?
Yes! You don’t need any hiking or climbing experience to embark on this thrilling adventure—only a desire for adventure! As you climb and explore, you’ll be led the entire way by an experienced guide. Mount Norquay’s guides all have ACMG certifications and ample experience guiding adventurous visitors through cliffs and twisting paths!
What Routes Are Beginner-Friendly?
We offer several shorter tours for those wanting to ‘test the terrain’ before committing to a full-day adventure. The Explorer Route offers 2.5 hours for those brand new to traversing mountains. You’ll be able to get acquainted with how the Via Ferrata system works while enjoying stunning mountain views and vistas, as well as a suspension bridge!
If you want to experience a longer adventure, try out the Ridgewalker Route! This four-hour tour is perfect for those with a bit more time on their hands, but still looking for moderate (but equally stunning) climbs. You’ll be guided through even more stunning vantage points, including several notable natural formations.
What to Bring With You
Before you start scaling mountains, preparation is key! You don’t want to forget anything when you’re hundreds of metres above the ground!
Here’s what you’ll need to bring for your Via Ferrata adventure:
- Eye protection
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Multiple clothing layers
- Snacks
What to Wear
Like any hiking adventure, you’ll be exposed to the sun, wind, and other elements during the Via Ferrata. Make sure you’re fully prepared with clothing layers. We recommend a weatherproof jacket, a cozy thermal layer underneath, and a thin, moisture-wicking layer under that. You’ll also need sturdy, comfortable hiking boots.
If you’re missing a few essentials, not to worry! Mount Norquay also offers first-come, first-served rentals. You’ll be able to rent several essentials, including backpacks, gloves, and raincoats!
Key Reminders to Note
- All participants (or their legal guardians) will need to sign a waiver before the adventure begins.
- The minimum age for these tours is 12+ for the Explorer and Ridgewalker Route, and 14+ for the Alpinist, Skyline, and Summiteer Route.
