Icewalks & Snow Tubing: Banff's Must-Do Activities for Winter 2025
Banff National Park transforms into a winter wonderland when the snow falls! While skiing and snowboarding are popular, some of the best winter activities happen off the slopes. If you're looking for unforgettable things to do in Banff this winter, look no further than the dynamic duo of family fun: icewalks and snow tubing.
These activities offer a perfect balance of awe-inspiring nature and heart-pounding excitement. Imagine walking through a frozen canyon where waterfalls have paused in time, creating shimmering walls of blue ice. Now, picture yourself spinning down a snowy chute, the wind in your face and laughter echoing through the mountains. Whether you are traveling with family, seeking a romantic getaway, or just looking for a new thrill, combining these experiences creates the ultimate Banff itinerary.
In this guide, we will explore why Johnston Canyon and Grotto Canyon are world-class hiking destinations, dive into the adrenaline rush of Mount Norquay’s famous tube park, and show you how to bundle these adventures for an unforgettable day in the mountains.
Discover the Magic of Icewalks
Winter hiking in Banff is unlike anywhere else on Earth. When the temperature drops, the landscape shifts from rushing rivers to frozen sculptures. An icewalk isn't just a hike; it's an immersive journey into a crystalline world that few get to see. Here are the top spots to lace up your cleats and explore.
Johnston Canyon Icewalk
As one of the most popular hiking trails in summer, Johnston Canyon takes on a completely different persona in the winter. The roaring creek falls silent under layers of ice and snow, and the famous waterfalls freeze into massive, suspended pillars.
The Experience:
Your journey begins on steel catwalks built directly into the canyon walls. As you make your way toward the Lower Falls, you’ll be surrounded by limestone cliffs dusted with snow. The main event, however, is the Upper Falls. Here, the ice creates a "Cathedral of Ice," a towering structure that often attracts ice climbers. Watching them scale the frozen curtains is a spectacle in itself.
Why go with a guide?
While the trail is accessible, joining a guided tour elevates the experience.
- Safety: The catwalks can be slippery. Tours provide ice cleats (micro-spikes) that fit over your boots, ensuring you have a grip on the icy terrain.
- Knowledge: Guides share fascinating insights about the geology, history, and wildlife of the canyon. You’ll learn how the canyon was formed and might even spot signs of local wildlife like pine martens or dippers.
- Convenience: Most tours include hotel pickup and drop-off, saving you the hassle of winter driving and parking.
Grotto Canyon Icewalk
For those looking for something a bit more off the beaten path, Grotto Canyon offers a unique geological adventure. Located near Canmore, this hike takes you along a frozen creek bed at the bottom of a narrow canyon.
The Experience:
Unlike Johnston Canyon, where you walk on catwalks, in Grotto Canyon, you walk directly on the frozen creek ice. It feels like walking on a glass floor with rocks and water visible beneath your feet. As you venture deeper, you’ll pass unusual rock formations and even ancient Indigenous pictographs painted on the canyon walls - historical treasures that are centuries old. The trail leads to a stunning frozen waterfall and a chilly ice cave.
Johnston Canyon Evening Icewalk
Want to ramp up the adventure factor? Try exploring Johnston Canyon after dark. Armed with a headlamp, you’ll see the canyon in a whole new light—literally. The shimmering ice reflects the beam of your light, and if you’re lucky, the moonlight and starry sky above create a serene, almost otherworldly atmosphere. It’s a peaceful, intimate way to experience one of Banff’s busiest attractions without the crowds.
The Thrill of Snow Tubing
After a morning of serene exploration, it’s time to dial up the energy. Snow tubing is the perfect counterpoint to a peaceful hike. It requires zero skill, zero equipment rentals, and guarantees 100% fun. It is essentially tobogganing 2.0- faster, smoother, and with a lift to take you back to the top!
Mount Norquay Tube Park
Located just 10 minutes from the town of Banff, Mount Norquay is home to the largest tube park in Alberta. It’s a local favorite and a must-visit for thrill-seekers.
What to expect:
- Speed and Scale: With eight lanes of high-speed fun, you won’t be waiting in long lines to get your fix. The lanes are groomed for speed, and the steep pitch of Norquay ensures you pick up serious momentum.
- The Magic Carpet: The worst part of sledding is walking back up the hill. At Norquay, a magic carpet lift whisks you and your tube back to the top effortlessly, so you can save your energy for screaming on the way down.
- Views for Days: From the top of the tube park, you get legendary views of Mount Rundle and the Cascade Mountain. It’s arguably one of the best photo ops in the area.
- Family Friendly: The tube park is suitable for kids over 42 inches tall and 4+ years old. It’s a fantastic way for families to bond, as you can often link tubes together to slide down in a group.
Snow Tubing at Lake Louise
If you find yourself exploring the Lake Louise area, there is also a tubing option at the Lake Louise Ski Resort. While smaller than Norquay, the "Sunny Tube" run offers two lanes of fun and is a great add-on if you are already planning a day at the resort or visiting the famous lake nearby.
The Ultimate Combo: Icewalk & Tubing Package
Why choose between tranquility and thrills when you can have both? We’ve curated the perfect winter day by combining the Johnston Canyon Icewalk with a Snow Tubing pass at Mount Norquay.
This package is designed to maximize your time and budget. Here is how your day could look:
The Morning: majestic ice
Start your day with an 8:30 AM pickup for the Johnston Canyon Icewalk. The crisp morning air is invigorating as you trek through the canyon. You’ll have plenty of time to snap photos of the frozen waterfalls and enjoy a hot chocolate break in the winter wonderland. By finishing in the morning, you beat the midday rush and get to see the canyon at its most peaceful.
The Afternoon: high-speed fun
After your hike, you’ll have some time to grab lunch in town before heading up to Mount Norquay (just a short drive or shuttle ride away). Your tubing pass gives you unlimited access to the lanes. Spend the afternoon racing your friends, spinning down the slopes, and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
Why book the combo?
- Value: Booking these activities together saves you money compared to purchasing them separately. Prices start from just $143 for adults.
- Ease: We handle the logistics of the tour, cleats, and tickets. You just need to show up ready for adventure.
- Variety: It’s the perfect "tasting menu" of Banff winter activities, giving you a mix of exercise, sightseeing, and adrenaline.
Preparing for your Adventure
To ensure you have the best possible time, a little preparation goes a long way. Winter in the Rockies is beautiful, but it demands respect for the elements.
What to Wear:
- Layers are Key: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer (thermal or merino wool). Avoid cotton, as it gets cold when wet. Add a warm mid-layer like a fleece or wool sweater, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof winter jacket.
- Bottoms: Snow pants are highly recommended for both activities. They keep you warm on the hike and, more importantly, keep your backside dry when you are sitting in a snow tube! If it is below -16°C (3°F), snow pants are mandatory for our tours.
- Footwear: Warm, insulated winter boots or sturdy hiking boots are essential. You need warmth and ankle support. Sneakers or dress shoes won't cut it on the snow.
- Accessories: Don't forget a warm hat (toque), waterproof mitts or gloves, and a neck warmer or scarf. Hand warmers are also a great addition for your pockets.
Transportation:
For the Icewalk, we offer convenient pickup points from most Banff hotels and the train station. For snow tubing, you will need to make your way to Mount Norquay. If you don't have a rental car, don't worry! There is a free shuttle bus service that runs regularly between downtown Banff and the ski resort.
