Fun Things to Do in Banff in September
September is one of our favourite times of year in Banff. The summer crowds begin to ease, the days are still great for getting outside, and the first signs of fall start to appear across the mountains.
It’s also the perfect month for adventure. You can get out on the Bow River, explore Banff by e-bike, cruise Lake Minnewanka, visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, search for wildlife or take in the views from the Banff Gondola.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or spending a full week in the Rockies, here are some of our favourite ways to experience Banff in September.
1. Get Out on the Bow River
There’s something pretty special about being out on the water with the Canadian Rockies all around you.
September is a great time to enjoy the Bow River before the paddling season winds down. Rent a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard and take in the incredible mountain scenery as you make your way along the river.
Prefer to sit back and enjoy the experience? A Big Canoe Tour is an easy way to get out on the water without needing previous paddling experience. You’ll get the fresh mountain air, spectacular views and plenty of photo opportunities while your guide takes care of the paddling.
The Bow River flows right through Banff, making it an easy addition to your itinerary — and one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the area from a different perspective.
Good to know: September mornings can be chilly, so bring a warm layer even if the afternoon forecast looks sunny.
2. Explore Banff by E-Bike
September is made for two wheels.
Cooler temperatures make cycling through the Bow Valley especially enjoyable, and an e-bike lets you cover more ground without turning your day into an endurance event.
Explore scenic routes around Banff and take in views of Mount Rundle, Sulphur Mountain and the Bow River. You can also venture further along the Bow Valley Parkway for a beautiful ride through the Rockies.
For an easy and fun way to explore, join a guided e-bike tour with Banff Adventures. Your local guide takes care of the route while you enjoy the scenery and learn more about Banff along the way.
September is also a great time to keep an eye out for the first fall colours appearing around the valley.
3. Chase the Golden Larches
If you’re visiting toward the end of September, you may arrive just in time for one of the Rockies’ most spectacular displays — golden larch season.
For a few short weeks each fall, alpine larches turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold. It’s one of the best times of year to get out on the trails around Banff and Lake Louise.
Popular hikes include Larch Valley, Taylor Lake and Healy Pass, although conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
Not a serious hiker? No problem. You can still enjoy the changing colours on a scenic sightseeing trip through the Rockies. Book a hiking tour for the best day.
4. Visit Lake Louise & Moraine Lake
Two of the most famous sights in the Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are must-sees during a Banff trip.
September is an especially beautiful time to visit, with the possibility of fall colours beginning to appear around the lakes and surrounding mountains.
Leave the driving and logistics to us and join a Lake Louise and Moraine Lake sightseeing tour from Banff. It’s an easy way to visit these iconic destinations without having to worry about parking, directions or putting together your own transportation.
Bring your camera — these are views you’ll want to remember.
5. Cruise Lake Minnewanka
Want to experience one of Banff National Park’s most iconic lakes without hiking around it?
Hop aboard a Lake Minnewanka Cruise and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery from the water.
The cruise combines sightseeing with stories about the lake, its history and the surrounding landscape. It’s a relaxed way to spend part of your day and works well for families, couples and anyone looking for a classic Banff experience.
Pair your cruise with another Banff activity for a full day of exploring.
6. Take in the Views from the Banff Gondola
For spectacular mountain views without a strenuous hike, head up Sulphur Mountain on the Banff Gondola.
Once at the top, take a walk along the summit boardwalk and enjoy panoramic views over Banff and the surrounding peaks.
September is a beautiful time to visit as the landscape begins its transition from summer to fall.
The gondola is also an easy activity to add to your Banff itinerary — especially if you want to balance more active adventures like hiking, biking or paddling with a more relaxed experience.
7. Go Wildlife Watching
Banff National Park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, and September can be an exciting time to explore the park in search of animals.
You might spot elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats or, if you’re very lucky, a bear.
Join a Wildlife on the Bow Big Canoe Tour for a different kind of wildlife experience. Rather than driving from one location to another, you’ll be out on the Bow River with a local guide, learning about the wildlife, landscape and natural history of the area.
And while wildlife sightings are always a bonus, remember that these are wild animals. There are no guarantees — and that’s part of the adventure!
8. Explore Banff on Two Wheels
Want to explore Banff at your own pace?
Rent a bike or e-bike from Banff Adventures’ Bear Street location and set off to discover the town and surrounding area.
Cycling is a fantastic way to get around Banff, especially in September when the temperatures are often comfortable for riding.
Cruise along the Bow River, visit scenic viewpoints or explore some of the quieter roads around town. An e-bike is a great choice if you want to see more of the Bow Valley without working too hard.
It’s also an easy way to build some flexibility into your itinerary — simply pick up your bike and start exploring.
9. Take an Adventure Along the Bow Valley Parkway
The Bow Valley Parkway is one of the most scenic routes in the Banff area and offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the mountains.
For cyclists, the route is particularly special during periods when sections are closed to vehicle traffic. It creates a peaceful environment for exploring by bike and enjoying the surrounding scenery.
Join a guided e-bike tour to Johnston Canyon and experience the route with a local guide. The ride combines mountain scenery with a fun cycling adventure and a chance to explore one of the Bow Valley’s best-known natural attractions.
10. Go Rafting
If you’re looking for a little more adrenaline, add whitewater raftingto your Banff itinerary.
Rafting is an exciting way to experience the rivers of the Rockies and see the surrounding landscape from a completely different perspective.
September can be a great time to get on the water, with cooler temperatures and beautiful early-fall scenery.
Whether you’re travelling with friends, family or a group looking for an adventure, rafting is a great way to add some excitement to your Banff getaway.
11. Explore the Icefields Parkway
Have an extra day during your Banff trip? Make the journey along the Icefields Parkway.
Stretching between Banff and Jasper, the Icefields Parkway is considered one of the world’s most spectacular mountain drives, with towering peaks, turquoise lakes, glaciers and waterfalls along the way.
A guided Icefields Parkway sightseeing tour lets you sit back and enjoy the scenery while someone else takes care of the driving.
September can be particularly beautiful along the Parkway, when fall colours begin appearing in the valley and the higher peaks may already have a dusting of snow.
12. Build Your Own Banff Adventure
One of the best things about visiting Banff in September is that you don’t have to choose just one type of adventure.
Mix and match activities to create your perfect day.
For an active day:
Start with an e-bike tour, spend the afternoon hiking or sightseeing, then relax in the hot springs.
For a sightseeing day:
Visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, take a Lake Minnewanka Cruise and finish with the Banff Gondola.
For a water-loving day:
Start with a Bow River canoe or Big Canoe Tour and add a rafting adventure for a little more excitement.
For a classic Banff experience:
Take a sightseeing tour, enjoy the mountain views from the Gondola, then head into downtown Banff for dinner.
And if you’re not sure how to fit everything in, that’s where our local team can help. Get in touch.
