Cruise, Cast, Paddle: Make the Most of Lake Minnewanka!

Discover the best ways to explore Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park. Enjoy scenic boat cruises, guided fishing trips, and kayak rentals in the Canadian Rockies.
Looking for a summer day trip that combines scenery, wildlife, and water all in one? Lake Minnewanka should be right at the top of your list. Stretching through a dramatic mountain valley just minutes from downtown Banff, this alpine lake offers some of the most stunning views you'll find anywhere in the Canadian Rockies.
In this short blog with Banff Adventures, we'll walk you through three fantastic ways to spend a day on the water. Whether you prefer kicking back on a guided cruise or charting your own course by kayak, there's something here for everyone. Let's dive in.
What's Special About Lake Minnewanka?
Lake Minnewanka is a stunning glacial lake just outside the town of Banff, extending over 21 kilometres in length and reaching depths of 142 metres. Nestled between mountains, it has a unique fjord-like shape that sets it apart from other lakes. It's large size also allows for several distinctive experiences, making it one of the most versatile lakes to visit in Banff!
The surrounding shoreline is also a hotspot for wildlife such as bighorn sheep, deer, and even the occasional bear (if you’re lucky!). Indigenous peoples have long considered the lake a place of great spiritual significance, with its name translating to "Lake of the Water Spirit."
Here are three ways to experience what this gorgeous lake has to offer.
Activity #1: Cruise The Open Water!
Starting at: $72
If you're after a relaxed way to soak in the full scale of the lake, a guided boat cruise is tough to beat. Sit back and enjoy a charming boat ride, letting the scenery come to you! Take in some of this lake's most scenic views, including the Devils Gap—known for its deep waters and dramatic surroundings.
As you ride across the open water, your guide will share stories about the lake's fascinating history, like the submerged resort village of Minnewanka Landing. This is one adventure you won’t want to miss!
Activity #2: Cast a Line on the Lake!
Starting at: $850
Lake Minnewanka is one of the few lakes in Banff National Park where motorized boats are allowed, which makes it a prime spot for an exciting fishing adventure! Experience a classic Canadian pastime right here on this striking glacial lake.
Whether you're a seasoned angler or you've never held a rod before, guided fishing trips make the experience stress-free. Your guide will supply the gear, share local knowledge about where the fish are biting, and handle the logistics so you can focus on the catch. While we recommend catching and releasing, each group member may take home two fish.
Activity #3: Take The Lake Solo!
Starting at: $65
Strap on your life jacket and explore the lake like never before, as you paddle along the shoreline and discover scenic spots! For those who want to set their own pace and chart their own course, renting a kayak or canoe is an excellent option.
While the lake looks incredible from the shoreline, it's a whole different experience once you're out on the surface with the mountain peaks rising all around you. Once you've had your fill of the main bay, plenty of paddlers keep going along the shore toward the quieter far end of the lake. These rentals include life jackets and paddles, so you’ll have everything needed to get started.
