Christmas in Banff & Lake Louise: Get Ready for a Mountain Holiday
There’s something pretty special about Christmas in the Canadian Rockies. Snow-covered mountains, twinkling lights, cozy cafés, festive events and plenty of ways to get outside make Banff and Lake Louise feel like they were made for the holidays.
From mid-November through the end of December, the Bow Valley fills up with Christmas markets, illuminated trails, special events and winter adventures. And if a mountain Christmas is on your wish list this year, there’s one thing you’ll want to do sooner rather than later:
Book your adventures in advance.
The most popular winter activities can fill up quickly over the holidays, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. So while you’re making your list and checking it twice, don’t forget to add your Banff activities to it!
Start With the Christmas Events
The holiday season gets started early in Banff and Lake Louise, with festive events beginning in November and continuing through December.
Banff Christmas Market
Get into the Christmas spirit at the Banff Christmas Market, held on select dates from November 19 to December 13, 2026. Browse local vendors, pick up unique gifts and enjoy plenty of festive food and entertainment.
It’s the perfect excuse to wander through Banff with a hot drink in hand and start checking a few names off your Christmas shopping list.
In Search of Christmas Spirit
For a little holiday magic after dark, head to the Cascade of Time Garden for In Search of Christmas Spirit. This immersive outdoor experience features illuminated wildlife sculptures, lights, soundscapes and a festive story set against the mountains.
The experience runs on select evenings from November 12, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with tickets free but requiring advance reservation.
Follow the Hot Chocolate Trail
Nothing says winter in Banff quite like a warm cup of hot chocolate after a day outside. The Hot Chocolate Trail runs from November 12, 2026 through February 7, 2027, with participating spots around Banff and Lake Louise creating their own festive hot chocolate creations.
Make it part of your après-adventure ritual.
Christmas at the Top of the Mountain
Christmas celebrations are heading up Sulphur Mountain too. A Very Vintage Mountaintop Christmas at the Banff Gondola runs on select dates from November 21 through December 31, with festive activities and holiday cheer high above Banff. And yes, there may even be a visit from Santa!
Then Add Some Real Rocky Mountain Adventure
The events are only part of the fun. A Christmas trip to Banff and Lake Louise isn't complete without getting outside and experiencing winter in the Rockies. This is where you’ll want to plan ahead.
Take a Christmas Sleigh Ride
Bundle up under a blanket and settle in for a classic horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy landscape.
A Banff sleigh ride is one of those quintessential Canadian Rockies experiences — and it’s particularly magical during the holiday season. Public and private sleigh rides are available, with additional departures during peak periods.
Our advice? Book your sleigh ride early. Holiday dates are popular, and once a departure is full, that’s it.
Looking for something extra special? A private sleigh ride for two makes a pretty memorable Christmas date.
Go Dog Sledding
Trade the sleigh bells for excited huskies and head into the winter wilderness on a dog sledding adventure.
Dog sledding is one of the most memorable ways to experience the Rockies in winter, whether you’re travelling as a family, with friends or as a couple. Banff & Lake Louise Tourism highlights dog sledding in both Lake Louise and Kananaskis among its recommended Christmas activities.
It’s also an experience with limited daily departures — making it one of those activities you really don’t want to leave until you arrive in Banff.
If dog sledding is on your must-do list, book it first.
Try a Snowmobile Tour
Want a little more adrenaline?
Hop on a snowmobile and explore the mountain landscape from a completely different perspective. Snowmobiling is a great choice for those looking to add some excitement to their winter getaway, with guided tours taking you beyond the usual sightseeing stops.
It’s the perfect addition to a holiday itinerary that includes a mix of festive experiences and outdoor adventure.
Walk Through a Frozen Canyon
One of the most spectacular winter experiences in Banff National Park is the Johnston Canyon Icewalk.
Follow the canyon trail and suspended catwalks through a winter wonderland of frozen waterfalls, ice formations and snow-covered cliffs. The guided experience includes transportation, a professional guide, ice cleats and hot chocolate.
There are daytime and evening options, so you can even walk through the canyon beneath the stars.
Pro tip: Pair it with another classic Banff experience. Banff Adventures' Gondola & Icewalk package combines Johnston Canyon with a trip up Sulphur Mountain, while the Giddy Up & Glide package pairs an Icewalk with a Banff sleigh ride.
Skate on Lake Louise
For the ultimate Christmas-card moment, head to Lake Louise when conditions allow and lace up your skates.
With Victoria Glacier towering above the lake, skating on Lake Louise is hard to beat. You can also explore the lakeshore, snowshoe or simply soak up the winter scenery.
Add a Lake Louise sightseeing tour or winter experience to make a full day of it. Rent skates from Banff Adventures as the best rate!
Hit the Slopes
Christmas in Banff wouldn't be complete without some time on the snow.
Whether you're an experienced skier or trying it for the first time, Banff and Lake Louise offer plenty of opportunities to ski, snowboard, take a lesson or try snow tubing.
And if you don't have all the gear? No problem. Rent skates, snowshoes, ice cleats, skis and other winter equipment in Banff and get out there.
Build Your Perfect Christmas Day
The best part about a Banff Christmas is that you don't have to choose between festive and adventurous.
You can do both.
Morning: Johnston Canyon Icewalk
Lunch: Cozy café stop in Banff
Afternoon: Banff Gondola
Evening: Hot Chocolate Trail or In Search of Christmas Spirit
Or...
Morning: Dog sledding
Afternoon: Explore Lake Louise
Evening: Christmas dinner and a sleigh ride
Or keep it classic:
Sleigh ride + hot chocolate + Christmas lights + mountain views.
There are endless ways to put together your own Rocky Mountain Christmas.
Don't Leave Your Christmas Adventures Until Christmas
Here's the most important part of planning a holiday getaway to Banff:
Don't wait until you arrive to book your activities.
Christmas and New Year's are some of the busiest times of the winter season, and popular experiences have limited departures and capacity. Sleigh rides, dog sledding, Icewalks and other guided adventures can sell out — particularly on the dates everyone wants.
Booking ahead means you get the time, date and experience you actually want, rather than building your itinerary around whatever happens to still be available.
And if you're planning several activities, booking early makes it much easier to build a schedule that actually works.
Banff Adventures offers a range of winter experiences and packages, including sleigh rides, Johnston Canyon Icewalks, dog sledding, the Banff Gondola and winter rentals. Some packages even combine multiple must-do experiences into one booking.
Make a List. Check It Twice. Then Book It.
A Christmas getaway to Banff and Lake Louise should be about enjoying the mountains — not scrambling to find something to do after you arrive.
So start planning now. The mountains will be waiting. Your favourite activities might not be.
Plan ahead, book your adventures and leave plenty of room for the best part of all: enjoying a very merry Christmas in the Canadian Rockies.
