Imagine visiting Moraine Lake, a shimmering, brilliant-blue lake tucked in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. You watch as the sun’s rays glimmer on the surface, and the water seems to dance in response softly. Grand mountain peaks stand tall and proud in the foreground, serenely watching over the valley. You close your eyes, feeling a wave of calmness wash over you.
Moraine Lake is one of the most enchanting sights in the Canadian Rockies. In this short blog with Banff Adventures, we’ll be delving into a few fun facts about this must-see sight before the Moraine Lake shuttle reopens next spring. Since 1996, Banff Adventures has been bringing unparalleled outdoor experiences to visitors from around the world. Read on!
#1: It’s One of Canada’s Most Recognizable Views
We don’t just call Moraine Lake unforgettable; it truly is. Moraine Lake is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, offering the most famous view of the stunning site. It sits right at the base of the valley with a panoramic view of all ten peaks, making it one of Canada’s most photographed landmarks and earning Moraine Lake international fame.
Moraine Lake had been featured among postcards, desktop wallpapers, video games, and more. It was even featured on Canada’s $20 bill from 1969 to 1979—talk about a view worth every penny!
#2: It’s Turquoise Colour Comes From Sediment
While Moraine Lake’s luminous turquoise hue may appear magical, it’s actually caused by naturally forming rock sediment. Over thousands of years, the valley’s glaciers have slowly ground down into particles called rock flour. These rock flour particles are exceptionally tiny, only around 0.002 mm in diameter. As a result, rock flour is exceptionally light, so much so that it doesn’t sink. Instead, it floats on Moraine Lake’s surface. When sunlight reflects off the particles, it creates brilliant shades of blue and green that make Moraine Lake look like something straight out of a storybook.
#3: Moraine Lake is Home to Many Animals
While the lake may appear regal and still in photos, you’ll quickly find how full of life it is when there. Once you take the Moraine Lake shuttle to the central lakefront, take a moment to look closely at the treelines or mountain edges. There’s a good chance you’ll spot some of Banff’s wild residents! From curious hoary marmot scuttling up trees to grazing elusive elk—Banff’s wildlife is truly a sight to behold.
Here are some of the animals you may see:
- Porcupines
- Deer
- Beavers
- Shrews
- Pikas
- Small alpine birds
#4: Moraine Lake Road Only Open in Warmer Months
Moraine Lake Road runs right under a vast glacial valley. During the winter months, the valley becomes highly prone to avalanches and falling ice, making it unsafe for visitors passing through. As a result, the road is fully closed from October to early June, with zero snow plowing or maintenance done during that time. By the time early summer comes around and snow is gone, Moraine Lake shuttles resume once again to allow visitors to experience the lake’s beauty!
Please note that Moraine Lake Road also does not allow private vehicles. If you want to visit the tranquil waters of the Lake, you can bike or hike the route, or conveniently book a Moraine Lake shuttle.
