3 Boat Activities in Banff You Don’t Want to Miss This Summer
Experience Banff's best boating adventures with Banff Adventures. Cruise Lake Minnewanka, enjoy guided fishing trips, or tackle thrilling white water rafting in the Canadian Rockies.
Banff boasts several iconic bodies of water, from gorgeous waterfalls to rushing rivers to calm, serene lakes. One of the best ways to experience Banff’s lakes and rivers is to get right on the water, which you can do with one of the many boating activities offered through Banff Adventures!
Whether you prefer to kick back and relax on a cruise or try your hand at the paddle, keep reading for four boating adventures that will make you never want to get off the water!
Motorboat Lake Cruise
Most outdoor Banff activities will have you on the move, but that doesn’t mean they have to be exhausting! Our Banff Lake Minnewanka Cruise offers the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and relaxation. It’s only one hour, making it an ideal way to end or gently slide into your day’s activities.
This cruise takes place on Lake Minnewanka, fifteen minutes from Banff’s town centre. Our experienced crew will offer an interpretive tour of the lake and the surrounding countryside, including some interesting facts about its history, folklore, and geology. Plus, if you’re over 18, you can book the Beer Voyage, enjoy a local craft brew, and even get a special gift to take home.
Fishing
If you love to fish, no doubt you’re itching to cast your reel on Banff’s lakeshores and secure a Lake Trout or Mountain Whitefish! We offer several fishing excursions at Banff Adventures that are fun whether you’re a seasoned angler or brand new to the sport.
Our private charters take off at 8 am, 1 pm, and 5:30 pm, so early risers and night owls alike can still secure a good catch. If you want to join other anglers on the water, we also offer public fishing adventures during the same time slots.
In between catches, you can have a rest and grab a bite at the Black Anchor Snack Shop and fuel up for more on-the-water fun!
Rafting
If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush this summer, white water rafting is where it’s at! You can find a lot (and we mean a lot) of rafting packages from Banff Adventures that combine this fun activity with other once-in-a-lifetime experiences. You get to experience all the rapids in Kicking Horse River (Golden, BC) with a group of other adventurers!
You can take the classic experience on its own, or add other fun activities like the Banff Gondola, horseback riding, or an ATV tour.
Information About Banff’s Lakes for Summer 2026
Before booking your trip to Banff this summer, it’s important to have all the information you need to enjoy your trip! Here are a couple of changes that our national park has implemented this year:
- Bad news—certain lakes are under a paddle ban. In March 2026, Parks Canada placed restrictions on canoeing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing with waders at Moraine Lake, Bow Lake, and Lake Minnewanka. But don’t worry—many of the lake excursions from Banff Adventures are still accessible!
If you have any concerns about which excursions you can book, feel free to contact us for more information.
- Good news—you don’t need a park pass! The Canada Strong Pass is now active, so from June 19 to September 7, you don’t need to pay to enter Banff National Park.
