Choose Your Banff Ski Resort: The Big 3
Banff, Alberta, is a skier’s paradise, home to three world-class ski areas often called the “Big 3”: Mt. Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise. Each resort has its own personality, terrain, and perks, so whether you’re a first-timer or a powder-chasing pro, there’s a perfect slope waiting for you.
- Mt. Norquay – Quick, Family-Friendly Fun
Just seven minutes from downtown Banff, Mt. Norquay is the ultimate choice for families, beginners, and those looking for a relaxed day on the slopes. Its gentle runs and kid-friendly ski school make it easy to get started. And for a twist, try night skiing—the only one in Banff! Fully lit trails and a terrain park offer a fun evening adventure under the stars. Insider tip: Grab a hot chocolate at the base lodge after your run—nothing beats the cozy vibe here.
Suggested Runs:
- Easy: Cascade, Zoomer, Sundance
- Intermediate: Night Flight, Abracadabra
- Advanced: No Memorial Bowl, The Chute, Norquay Gully, North American Express
- Sunshine Village – Alpine Adventure with Epic Views
Located only 15 minutes from town (plus a Gondola ride), Sunshine Village is famous for its high alpine terrain and panoramic vistas. With wide-open bowls, glades, and long runs, it’s ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers. Sunshine often boasts some of the best snow in Banff, and its long season (sometimes into May) gives you plenty of opportunities to chase fresh powder. Insider tip: Take the Gondola to Goat’s Eye Mountain for stunning views and a photo-worthy lunch spot.
Suggested Runs:
- Easy: Rock Isle Road, Dell Valley
- Intermediate: Tin Can Alley
- Advanced: The wildwest, Delirium Dive
- Lake Louise – Iconic, Big-Mountain Skiing
As one of North America’s largest ski resorts, Lake Louise is a must for anyone visiting Banff. With four mountain faces, hundreds of runs, and terrain for every ability, it’s a dream for both beginners and experts. Beyond skiing, the scenery is simply breathtaking—glaciers, jagged peaks, and pristine alpine forests everywhere you look. Insider tip: For a challenge, try the Back Bowls for powder-filled runs away from the crowds, or simply enjoy the easier groomed slopes with a view that feels straight out of a postcard.
Suggested Runs:
- Easy: Pika, Wiwaxy
- Intermediate: Larch, Boomerang
- Advanced: Mens downhill, back bowls and chutes
Pro Tips for Visiting the Big 3:
- Timing matters: Early morning is best for fresh snow and smaller lift lines.
- Layer up: Weather can change fast in the Rockies, even in spring.
- Mix it up: Try all three resorts if you have time—you’ll get a full Banff skiing experience.
“Green/Blue/Black” ratings vary between resorts — a green at one resort might feel more like an intermediate at another.
For beginners: stick to runs listed as green or “easy” and avoid off‑piste/ungroomed chutes.
For intermediates preparing to upgrade: look for wide blue runs that let you build control
For advanced skiers: when you see names like Delirium Dive (Sunshine) or Men’s Downhill (Lake Louise) or Gun Run (Norquay), gear up: steeper slopes, moguls, exposure.
Always check current conditions, crowd levels, and whether the lift servicing the run is open
Whether you’re learning your first turns at Mt. Norquay, exploring Sunshine’s alpine bowls, or conquering Lake Louise’s vast terrain, Banff’s Big 3 promise unforgettable adventures in the heart of the Rockies.
